I have low porosity hair

Hey beautiful people, this blog post is a friendly reminder that knowing your hair porosity is more important than knowing your hair type. Most people are obsessed with knowing if they are 4A or 4C than knowing if they have
low or high porosity. Knowing your hair porosity will save you lots of money and time. So let me help you know what hair porosity you have and product suggestions for each hair porosity.

What is the meaning of hair porosity?

Hair porosity refers to the ability of hair to absorb and retain moisture

Three types of hair porosity:

Low porosity

Hair has firmly closed cuticles that don’t absorb moisture easily but when it does, it retains the moisture for long. Because low porosity hair doesn’t absorb treatments easily, it is prone to product buildup that is why people with low porosity hair need to clarify their scalp occasionally.

Characteristics of low porosity hair

-Difficult to hydrate

-Less prone to breakage and split ends

-Hair takes longer to get saturated and longer for it to dry

-Prone to single strand knots

-Prone to product buildup

Normal porosity

Hair that has slightly loose cuticles that absorbs just the right amount of liquid and holds on to it.

Characteristics of normal porosity hair

-Requires less maintenance

-Doesn’t take too long to dry or get saturated

-Minimal breakage and split ends

-Easily absorbs and retain moisture

High porosity

Hair has raised cuticles that can absorb moisture but cannot retain it and loses it quickly. The lack of moisture retention leaves the hair frizzy, prone to breakage and damage.

Characteristics of high porosity hair

-Prone to matting up

-Hair absorbs water quickly

-Takes a long time to dry

-More prone to damage and split ends

-Needs and loves protein

Now you know the different types of hair porosities so the next thing you need to know is why it is important to know your hair porosity.

Benefits of knowing your hair porosity

-Help you make the best choice in deciding which products you should include in your hair regimen. For example, you may have a friend who swears by coconut oil for her hair but when you try it, it didn’t do anything
for your hair. By knowing your hair’s porosity level, you can make smarter hair regime decisions and save money.

-You’ll be able to understand your protein-moisture balance. You will be able to know when your hair needs protein and when it needs moisture.

-You’ll be able to observe what you hair needs and look after it properly.

-You will be able to determine how much moisture your needs on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.

-You will understand why your hair dry, breaking or has so much shrinkage.

Can you change your hair porosity? Yes and no. If the cause of your hair porosity is genetic, there’s nothing much you can do about it but if the reason is hair damage, your hair will take time to recover from it.

I’ll discuss how to care for each type of porosity in future blog posts. Please leave a comment if you find this article useful. Thank you for reading, kisses.
